Balance Before the Descent: Mabon, the Equinox & a Full Moon in Fire

There is something very particular about this week, the light is still here, but it is beginning to loosen its grip.

The evenings are arriving earlier, the air feels different, the mornings carry that faint edge of coolness, and the whole landscape seems to be reminding us that the year is turning whether we are ready or not. (Personally, I am beyond ready!)

This week brings us the Autumn Equinox, Mabon, and then a Full Moon in Aries at the weekend so we have balance, harvest, reflection, gratitude, preparation… and then a great big burst of fire at the end of it.

Very subtle.. right?!

The universe has apparently decided that after asking us to slow down, reflect and find equilibrium, it would also like us to finish the week by setting something metaphorically on fire.

Energetically speaking, of course… Mostly.

Mabon and the Autumn Equinox

The Autumn Equinox is the astronomical moment when the sun crosses the celestial equator and we begin moving more fully into the darker half of the year. Here in the UK, it falls in the early hours of Wednesday 23 September.

Mabon is the modern Pagan celebration many of us now associate with this point on the Wheel of the Year.

The two are connected, but they are not quite the same thing.

The Equinox is the astronomical event, Mabon is the seasonal and spiritual celebration we build around it.

And while the name Mabon is widely used now, it is worth knowing that it is not an ancient traditional name for the Autumn Equinox. It came into modern Pagan use in the 1970s and has since become part of the language of the contemporary Wheel of the Year.

I actually think there is something lovely about knowing that, tradition does not always mean ancient, sometimes traditions are created because they speak to people, because they give us a language for the season, because they help us pause and mark something meaningful.

And Mabon, for many of us, has become exactly that, a moment to notice what has grown and to give thanks.

A moment to recognise what is enough and to prepare ourselves for the descent into darker months.

The Balance Point

The Equinox is often talked about as a perfect balance of light and dark.

Astronomically, day and night are not always exactly equal in length because of the way sunrise and sunset are measured, but symbolically, the equinox still gives us a beautiful threshold to work with.

Balance, not perfection, or an exact fifty-fifty split…. Balance.

And I think that is an important distinction because real balance rarely looks neat does it? It changes, some weeks work needs more of us, some weeks family does, some weeks our bodies need everything, some weeks we need to say no more often.

Some weeks, we need to stop trying to carry all of it beautifully, balance is not necessarily  about giving equal energy to everything.

It is about noticing where your energy is going and deciding whether that still feels sustainable.

Mabon Reflection

Take a few quiet minutes and ask yourself:

Where in my life do I feel nourished?

Where do I feel depleted?

What is taking more than it gives?

What deserves more of my attention?

What am I grateful I have carried this far?

What would balance actually look like for me right now?

Sunday & Monday –

Waxing Moon in Capricorn – Build What Will Carry You

We begin the week under a waxing Capricorn moon. Capricorn is practical, steady and very interested in foundations, it is not here for vague intentions with no follow-through, it wants to know what will actually support you.

And because we are moving towards the darker half of the year, this feels like a lovely moment to think practically about what you want in place before autumn settles fully around us.

Maybe that is a better evening routine? Maybe it is batch cooking? Maybe it is moving appointments around so you have more breathing room?

Maybe it is finally sorting out that corner of the house that has been quietly judging you since April…

Capricorn reminds us that preparation is a form of self-care.

Capricorn Ritual: Build the Support

Write down one thing you know would make autumn easier.

Then beneath it write:

What needs to be in place for this to work?

Keep it practical, eg a reminder, schedule, boundary, shopping list, a booking or a conversation.

Then say:

“I create what can hold me.
I prepare with care.
I build with intention.”

And do one small thing towards it.

Tuesday & Wednesday

Waxing Moon in Aquarius – Step Back & Look Again

As the moon moves into Aquarius, the energy shifts.

Aquarius gives us perspective, it helps us look at our habits, routines and expectations from slightly further away.

This is useful at Mabon because sometimes we do not realise how off-balance something has become until we stop standing in the middle of it.

Aquarius asks: Does this still work for me?

And doesn’t care much for: Have I always done it this way? Or Will everyone else understand?

Aquarius Ritual: Rewrite the Pattern

Choose one area of life where you feel stuck.

Write:

“The old way has been…”

Then:

“A new way could be…”

Do not overthink it, let yourself imagine a different rhythm, sometimes change begins long before action, and sometimes it begins the moment we realise we are allowed to do something differently.

Thursday & Friday

Moon in Pisces – Soften Before the Full Moon

By Thursday we begin moving into Pisces, and this is where things become quieter again. Pisces is intuitive, emotional, imaginative and deeply connected with the unseen, after Capricorn’s structure and Aquarius’s perspective, Pisces asks us to soften, feel and listen.

To notice what the body is saying before the mind talks over it.

This is a beautiful time for baths, meditation, journaling, music, dream work and gentler forms of reflection.

And because we are approaching a Full Moon, emotions may feel a little louder but that does not mean everything needs acting on, sometimes it simply needs witnessing.

Pisces Ritual: Listen Before You Decide

Sit somewhere quiet with a bowl of water.

Place your hands around it and ask:

“What am I ready to understand more deeply?”

Close your eyes, do not force an answer, just breathe.

Then write whatever comes.

When you are finished, place your fingertips into the water and say:

“I trust what rises.
I honour what I feel.
I allow clarity to come gently.”

Pour the water onto the earth afterwards.

Saturday

Full Moon in Aries

Fire, Courage & Moving Forward

Saturday brings the Full Moon, and this one has fire in it!

The Moon reaches full phase on Saturday 26 September at around 5:49pm UK time, Aries brings courage, momentum, instinct and the willingness to begin, this feels particularly powerful coming straight after the Equinox.

Mabon asks us to pause, gather, give thanks and find balance.

Aries then says: Good. Now what are you going to do with what you’ve learned?

This is not gentle, passive energy, it is alive and it wants movement, action and honesty.

Because this full moon lands as we are stepping into the darker half of the year, I love the idea of using it not just to release, but to decide what fire you want to carry with you.

Aries Full Moon Ritual: Carry the Flame

Light a candle. Sit with it for a few moments and ask:

What am I ready to stop carrying?

Write that down.

Then ask:

What strength do I want to carry into the darker months?

Choose one word.

(Courage, Health, Discipline, Joy, Confidence, Protection, Motivation, Trust)

Write it beneath the first.

Tear away or safely burn the first part if that feels right, keep the second.

Then say:

“I release what has weighed me down.
I keep the fire that strengthens me.
I move into the darker season with courage, clarity and purpose.”

Preparing for the Darker Half of the Year

This is one of my favourite things about Mabon, it isn’t only about gratitude, it’s also about preparation. Our ancestors would have been thinking very practically at this time of year.

What has been harvested? What can be stored? What will carry us through? What needs preserving? What needs protecting?

And we can still work with those ideas now, luckily not because we need to start salting meat in the garage (please don’t…) But because the principle still matters.

What nourishes you? What keeps you well? What do you need more of when the days get shorter?

You might begin preparing by:

  • Restocking herbal teas
  • Making soups or freezer meals
  • Refreshing blankets and bedding
  • Creating a cosy evening corner
  • Bringing candles back into your routine (as if they ever left!)
  • Drying or storing herbs
  • Checking in on supplements or wellness routines
  • Planning movement you will actually want to do when it is dark outside
  • Making space for rest before you desperately need it

There is something deeply witchy about preparation, it might not be the most glamorous, but often, neither is most real magic.

Mabon Celebration

This evening we are gathering for our Mabon celebration at The Goddess Haven.

We will be exploring balance in our own lives, working with gratitude, moving through ritual, meditation and sound, and taking time to acknowledge what has already been gathered from this year.

There is something very grounding about marking the Equinox together, Actually stopping, noticing and giving thanks. That alone is often enough to shift something.

Full Moon Circle – Fire Cider, Wellness & Preparing for the Dark

Then on Saturday 26 September, we gather again for our Full Moon Women’s Circle.

And this one feels perfectly timed! We will be making fire cider together, working with herbs, roots and warming ingredients traditionally associated with nourishment, protection and the colder months ahead.

It is such a lovely fit for an Aries Full Moon too, fire outside, fire within.

A fiery preparation for the descent into the darker half of the year.

The evening will weave together wellness, balance, intention, ritual and seasonal preparation, with space to reflect on what we want to carry with us into autumn.

There is something incredibly powerful about making something practical with intention.

A jar you can hold, shake, tend, and watch transform. Something that continues working long after the ritual itself has ended. That, to me, is one of the most beautiful forms of seasonal magic.

A Simple Mabon Gratitude Ritual

If you are celebrating at home this week, try this.

Take an apple and slice it horizontally through the middle, you will see the five-pointed star formed by the seeds inside.

Pause and notice it, then think of five things you are grateful for from this year, one for each point, saying each one aloud.

Then eat the apple slowly, letting gratitude become something physical, something received and taken in.

You might say:

“I honour what has grown.
I give thanks for what has sustained me.
I receive the gifts of this season with gratitude.”

Simple, seasonal, very Mabon.

A Thought for the Week

There is a reason this season feels so powerful, we are standing at a threshold.

Behind us is the light half of the year, ahead of us is the dark, neither is better, we need both.

Growth and rest, action and reflection, expansion and withdrawal, light and shadow.

Mabon reminds us that balance is not about choosing one side.

It is about learning how to move between them, so this week, gather what you have learned, give thanks for what has grown, notice where balance is needed and prepare yourself gently.

When the Aries Full Moon arrives, choose the fire you want to carry with you.

Weekly Intention

“I honour the balance between light and dark, give thanks for all that has grown, and carry forward only what strengthens me.”

Have a beautiful Mabon week.

May your home feel warm, your body feel supported, your heart feel grateful, and your fire remain strong enough to light the darker road ahead.

Until next week,

With love,

Marie xx
