Wintering, Gentle Thresholds, and the New Moon That Asks Us to Be Real With Ourselves
Mid-January holds a very particular kind of atmosphere.
The festive glow has faded, life has restarted, work, school, appointments, responsibilities, routines, expectations. On the surface, everything is moving again,
but inside, many of us are still tired.
There’s growing conversation around the idea of “wintering” and it feels like such a compassionate truth. We are not designed to be in full bloom right now. Nature isn’t. The earth is conserving. Roots are strengthening underground. Nothing is rushing. Our ancestors would have listened into the rhythm of the land and rested alongside Mother Earth, and yet, modern life keeps asking us to show up as though it’s spring.
So this week’s invitation is not to fight reality, many of us don’t have that luxury, and not to disappear from life either. It’s about finding a middle path: continuing with your responsibilities while also weaving gentleness into the spaces between them.
Not perfection.
Not pressure.
Just presence.
🌑✨ A New Moon on the Threshold
Capricorn Moving Into Aquarius
Today’s New Moon doesn’t sit neatly in a single energy. It begins in Capricorn and shifts into Aquarius this evening, which makes it feel less like a hard reset and more like standing in a doorway.
Capricorn asks us to reflect honestly on what has become unsustainable.
The routines that drain us.
The expectations we’ve outgrown.
The pressure we place on ourselves to keep pushing.
Aquarius, arriving shortly after, brings a quieter but equally important question:
What would feel more true? More spacious? More authentic?
This New Moon is not asking for grand goals or dramatic reinvention. It’s inviting something softer and more honest:
• Release what is no longer aligned
• Acknowledge where you’ve been overextending
• Begin imagining a life that feels more like yours
• Set intentions rooted in authenticity rather than pressure
A Gentle New Moon Ritual for This Energy
You’ll need:
• A candle
• A piece of paper
• A few quiet moments
Light the candle and take three slow breaths.
First, write one thing you are ready to release.
Something that feels heavy, outdated, or draining.
A belief, a pattern, an expectation or simply the guilt around needing rest.
Then, write one intention for the version of yourself you are growing into.
Not a productivity goal, but a way of being.
Examples:
• I move through life at a pace that honours my nervous system
• I choose sustainability over burnout
• I give myself permission to rest without justification
• I trust my own rhythm
• I live more truthfully
Fold the paper and place it somewhere meaningful. Let it be a quiet, ongoing commitment to yourself rather than something you need to act on immediately.
🌙 This Week’s Lunar Flow
Sunday | New Moon in Capricorn moving into Aquarius
A reflective, liminal energy. A beautiful day for journalling, intention setting, and noticing what feels heavy versus what feels aligned. Gentle insight rather than action.
Monday–Wednesday | Moon in Aquarius
Aquarius brings space and perspective. This is a supportive time for thinking differently, loosening emotional heaviness, and reconnecting with your individuality.
Conversations that feel honest. Moments of insight. Time alone without isolation.
A simple Aquarius practice:
Light a candle and ask yourself, “Where am I ready to be more honest with myself?”
Write freely for five minutes.
Thursday–Friday | Moon in Pisces
Pisces energy is soft, emotional, and deeply intuitive. This is where self-care becomes genuinely restorative rather than optional.
Beautiful practices for this phase:
• Ritual baths or long showers
• Listening to calming music or sound
• Gentle meditation
• Allowing tears if they come
• Creative expression without outcome
You don’t need to analyse everything. Sometimes feeling is enough.
Saturday | Moon in Aries
Aries brings the first spark of returning fire. After a softer week, you may feel a small shift toward motivation. This isn’t about pushing, but about gentle momentum.
A simple Aries ritual:
Light a candle and say aloud:
“I trust my energy as it returns in its own time.”
Then take one small supportive action, nothing overwhelming, just one step.
Wintering While Living Real Life
Most of us cannot fully retreat in winter. We still have responsibilities, people who rely on us, work that needs doing. That doesn’t mean we’re doing anything wrong.
Wintering doesn’t mean stopping life. It means softening how we move through it.
Some simple ways to honour the season without changing your whole life:
• Drinking something warm before checking your phone
• Slowing down how you move between tasks
• Taking a few deeper breaths between appointments
• Letting yourself say no to one unnecessary thing
• Making everyday tasks feel more intentional
This is how we live seasonally inside modern life.
