Between Worlds: Ancestor Connection & the Whisper of Samhain
There’s something sacred in the air this week, that quiet stillness before the veil thins completely, when the boundaries between seen and unseen begin to blur. The trees shed what they no longer need, the earth cools, and the wind seems to carry whispers of those who once walked beside us.
As the moon waxes through Capricorn into Aquarius, then toward Pisces by the weekend, the energy calls us to remember, our roots, our lineage, and the deep wisdom carried in our bones. Capricorn invites grounding and gentle structure. Aquarius brings an air of reflection and detachment, helping us see patterns from a higher perspective. By the time the moon slips into Pisces, intuition and emotion flow freely, readying us for Samhain’s sacred threshold.
🕯️Nervous System Reset
At this time of year, our energy often dips, not just from darker days, but from the energetic weight of transition. Here are some simple ways to regulate and realign:
1. Breath of the Ancestors
Sit somewhere quiet. Inhale slowly through your nose for four counts, visualising roots descending from your spine deep into the earth. Hold for four. Then exhale for six, releasing tension. Imagine the breath of your ancestors moving through you, steady, strong, supportive. Repeat for five cycles.
2. Salt & Smoke Ritual Bath
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, draw a warm bath. Add a handful of sea salt, rosemary for remembrance, and rose petals for self-love. As you soak, whisper:
“I release what no longer serves, and honour what remains.”
If you don’t have a bath, try a bowl of saltwater for your hands, intention is everything.
3. Sound Grounding
If your thoughts spiral, hum. Literally. The vibration anchors you into your body, calming your vagus nerve and slowing your heartbeat. Bonus witchy points if you add a candle and focus on the flicker of the flame as you hum.
🖤 Ritual: Calling the Ancestors
You will need:
- A candle (white, black, or deep red)
- A small bowl of water
- A few grains of salt
- A photograph, heirloom, or symbolic token of your ancestors
1. Prepare your space.
Light your candle and take three grounding breaths. Feel the weight of your body and the pulse of life beneath your feet.
2. Call them in.
Say aloud:
“I call upon those who walked before me, who whisper through my blood and dreams.
I honour your lessons and release your pain.
Walk beside me in love, not in shadow.”
3. Listen.
Spend a few quiet minutes in stillness. Notice any sensations, thoughts, or emotions that arise, sometimes our ancestors speak not in words, but through feelings, warmth, or memory.
4. Close with gratitude.
Sprinkle a pinch of salt into the water and say thank you. Blow out your candle and leave the water under the moonlight for the night, as an offering of peace.
🌕 Shadow Work Prompts for Samhain
- Which parts of myself have I buried to feel safe or accepted?
- What am I ready to release as I step into the darker half of the year?
- How do I want to honour those who came before me, not in grief, but in gratitude?
Write freely, without judgement. Let the ink be your mirror.
